After nearly ten years of successful operations, the Soteria-Berlin had to move to new premises for the necessary core refurbishment of the entire building in which it was housed.
Designed to support patients during first-episode psychosis, a re-newed Soteria Berlin was created in a historic building on the St Hedwig's Hospital campus, opening in September 2023.
This roughly 5-minute long “project trailer” introduces the Soteria Berlin along with the fundamental concepts it embodies such as "active" atmosphere and milieutherapy.

Die Behandlung in der Soteria stützt sich u.a. auf die therapeutische Wirkung eines gestalteten Milieus. Das Milieu hat soziale (als “Lebensgruppe,” u.a. ohne hierarchische Trennung zwischen den Mitarbeiter*innen diverser Berufsgruppen und Patienten*innen) und räumliche Aspekte, die sich synergetisch ergänzen.
Nach etwa zehn Jahren Betrieb musste die Soteria-Berlin für die notwendige Kernsanierung des gesamten Gebäudes in neue Räumlichkeiten umziehen.
Konzipiert für die Unterstützung von Patienten in der ersten Phase einer Psychose wurde eine neu gestaltete Soteria Berlin geschaffen, in einem historischen Gebäude auf dem Campus des St.-Hedwigs-Krankenhauses eingerichtet und im September 2023 eröffnet.

The treatment in the Soteria is based, among other things, on the therapeutic effect of its milieu (environment), with the understanding that this environment has both social (as a nonhierarchical "living community" without hierarchical separation between doctor and patient) and spatial aspects that complement each other synergistically.

The Soteria 2 was presented at the ARCH24 Conference in June 2024 in Espoo, Finland as a Best-Practice Case Study. Following on the conference, a peer-reviewed paper was published in December 2024 by the Aalto University, which describes the project and the consensus-design process through which it was built in detail. The paper, “Soteria Berlin – A Case Study in Active Atmosphere and Inclusive Design,” co-written by Dr. Martin Voss and Jason Danziger, looks broadly at the development of the Soteria movement in general and tracks the development of the two Soteria projects built at the St. Hedwig’s Hospital in Berlin. It also shares ongoing research on design methods based on the sociopetal concepts of late modernist Japanese-Canadian architect Kiyoshi Izumi in combination with 'active atmosphere' mechanisms developed in an ongoing interdisciplinary process with PSYCH.RAUM Partner Dr. Martin Voss of the Charité Berlin.
