The "Adam Wieland Metal Workshop" in Karlsruhe, which manufactures the famous E2 table frame based on plans by Egon Eiermann, finally unites separate locations for the metal workshop, warehouse and the business HQ in a new bespoke building on the Egon-Eiermann-Allee in Karlsruhe.

Die „Adam Wieland Metallwerkstatt“ in Karlsruhe, die das berühmte Tischgestell E2 nach Plänen von Egon Eiermann hergestellt, legt ihre getrennten Standorte für die Metall- werkstatt, das Lager und die Buchhaltung in einem neuen Haus in der Egon-Eiermann- Allee zusammen.

The building volume rises slowly from the street. It begins with a sequence related to the basic activities of the company: exhibition, shipping & recieving, factory and warehouse, leading up to the highest point of the building where office space is housed. There, the figure folds back to meet the street again. At the street level, this creates a void, which - as a closed glass volume - becomes a large shop window which is used to display the E2 table and associated products.
Die kontinuierlich anwachsende Gebäudefigur thematisiert das Zusammenlegen der un- terschiedlichen Funktionen. Die Abfolge von Anlieferung, Metallwerkstatt, Lager führt bis zum höchsten Punkt des Gebäudes, wo die Büroflächen untergebracht sind. Dort trifft die Figur wieder auf die Straße. Auf Straßenniveau entsteht so ein Leerraum, der - gläsern geschlossen - zum großen Schaufenster wird.
Die Wände zwischen den erd- geschossigen Showroom, Lager und Produktion besitzen großflächige Glasflächen, so dass ein beständiger Blickkontakt zwischen den funktional unterschiedlichen Bereichen besteht. Das erleichtert zum einen die Arbeit für die Angestellten und schafft zugleich eine „gläserne Fabrik“ für die Besucher des Showrooms.
The walls between the ground floor showroom, warehouse and production have large glass windows, enabling visual contact between the functionally different areas. This facilitates internal communication between employees while simultaneously creating opportunites for the visitors to view and understand production methods - a "transparent factory."

A masonry-based system was chosen to construct the building. The Wohnhaus Matthies (Egon Eiermann, Potsdam, 1936/37) provided inspiration to the design team in terms of creating dynamic and textured volumes with traditional building materials.
